From Apprentice to Award Winner: Jake Thomas Achieves Distinction in His Level 2 Land Based Service Engineer Apprenticeship
Geocore Site Investigations is celebrating one of our own — Jake Thomas, who has just completed his Level 2 Land Based Service Engineer Apprenticeship with a distinction! We caught up with Jake to chat about his journey, his proudest moments, and what keeps him motivated both in and out of the workshop.
So Jake, what does your job involve?
“Pretty much everything!” Jake laughs. “I’m an apprentice plant mechanic, so my days are really varied — anything from creating PO numbers and ordering parts to reading technical drawings, wiring diagrams, and hydraulic schematics. I handle vehicle maintenance, repairs, site breakdowns across the country, and manage plant maintenance spreadsheets and online diaries. Every day’s different — that’s what I love about it.”
What originally got you interested in this kind of work?
“I actually wanted to join the RAF — first as a pilot, then as an engineering technician. When that didn’t quite pan out, I came to Geocore for a change, worked as a site technician for a few months and then the apprenticeship role became available. I’ve always liked taking things apart, fixing them, and learning how they work.”
What do you enjoy most about your role?
“The diagnostic side. I like problem-solving. Routine maintenance can be a bit dull, but when there’s a complex issue to figure out — that’s where I get interested. I love a challenge!
You recently won Apprentice of the Year for the North East too. Congratulations! What did you have to do to earn it?
“It took a lot of revision and a lot of hours! My college tutor recognised my determination and nominated me. I had to do a ten-minute presentation and provide written statements from colleagues. It was definitely worth it.”
How did it feel to win?
“It felt great — I really appreciated it. It came at a tricky time, after a few staff changes in the team. We were the smallest company represented at the awards ceremony, and it was the first time we’d ever been nominated as a company. It felt justified after all the hard work.”
How has Geocore supported your apprenticeship journey?
“It’s been up and down at times because of staff changes, but that actually helped me develop quicker and become more self-sufficient. I had to use my initiative and work with sister companies, which gave me loads of new experiences and helped broaden my knowledge.”
What challenges have you faced, and how have you overcome them?
“Talking to clients and suppliers used to be tough — I wasn’t that confident at first. But now I can handle that side of things independently and know the process. My confidence has really grown.”
Now for the fun questions!
What’s next for you?
“Level 3! And maybe another award,” Jake grins. “I’m also doing a welding course in the evenings — it’s more in-depth and really interesting.”
Important question — what’s your favourite cuisine?
“Anything that isn’t a vegetable! I love steak — I’ve had it four times this week. I have just learnt how to cook it properly. I like it medium and love rib-eye and Wagyu!”
If you could instantly learn a new skill, what would it be?
“To be ambidextrous! Although I am not sure that can be classed as a skill. Working in tight spaces can be tricky when you can only really use one hand properly.”
Favourite TV series?
“I don’t watch much TV, but I’ve seen Futurama all the way through — that’s the only one I can think of! That’s from growing up and watching it with my Uncle David”
What are your hobbies?
“I love cars — driving them, showing them, working on them. I go to car shows at the weekend and often work on my own or friends’ cars. I also used to do MMA, which I’d like to get back into.”
First thing you do when you get home from work?
“Let the dogs out!”
Best piece of advice you’ve been given?
“Focus on your education — it really does mean a lot.”
Finally, what’s the best thing about working for Geocore?
“I’m trusted to use my initiative and be self-sufficient, but I’m still part of a great team. I get to learn, develop, and take ownership of my work — that’s the best part.”
We’re proud of Jake’s hard work and achievement — his dedication and passion are great examples of what our apprenticeship programme is all about. Congratulations again, Jake, on your distinction and your bright future ahead at Geocore!
