Today’s engineers face a range of challenges when it comes to sustainable, robust and affordable design. Projects can be developed where ground conditions are unknown or undocumented and more extreme weather conditions are straining assets and structures. A small investment in ground investigation at a project’s beginning can ensure long-term financial savings. Additionally, protecting the environment has become more important when developing brownfield sites, highlighted by changes in legislation and increased public awareness concerning environmental issues. A proficient ground investigation establishes the level and extent of ground contamination. Furthermore, it enables risk assessments regarding any risk to human health and the environment. Now, it is more important than ever that accurate information is gathered to establish the cost implications and estimates for remediating sites.

Geocore’s teams provide integrated site investigation services, including all aspects of drilling, in situ testing, reporting and laboratory testing under our sister company’s UKAS-accredited laboratories. Our office in Redcar offers significant local resources to the north. However, with support from RSK-affiliated companies scattered throughout mainland UK, we can deliver projects nationwide. We are problem-solvers, happy to engage collaboratively with clients and support projects at the early contractor involvement stage with a best-for-project approach.

We are an experienced team with a strong background in land drilling. We operate across all sectors, UK-wide, which has given us a great depth of knowledge of our clients’ needs, UK ground conditions and how to deliver complex ground source projects and investigations.

Laboratory testing

Our in-house RSK laboratories can undertake wide-ranging testing services, keenly emphasising quality. We provide the full range of soil classification tests, including moisture content, Atterberg limits and particle size distribution (via wet and dry sieving and hydrometer). We also offer optimum moisture content/maximum dry density (OMC/MDD), as well as rock strength testing, including unconfined compressive strength and point load determination (non-UKAS accredited test).

Our sister companies offer a range of concrete testing options, enabling us to expand our capabilities to test the compressive strength and density of concrete cubes. We can also test the unconfined compressive strength of concrete cores (non-UKAS accredited). In addition to providing aggregate grading, we can accommodate a full range of geotechnical and environmental tests by utilising laboratories across the RSK Group.

Soil and rock logging

Our geotechnical engineers have extensive experience in the logging of soil and rock to BS 5930:2015, BS EN ISO 14688-1:2017 and BS EN ISO 14688-2:2017, along with relevant Construction Industry Research and Information Association (CIRIA) guidance.

Factual reporting

Factual reports are written by our qualified and experienced team of geoenvironmental engineers and cover every aspect of the site investigation, including:

  • purpose and scope of the investigation
  • accounts of all field and laboratory work
  • exploratory hole records (trial pits, window sample holes and boreholes), including grid coordinates and levels
  • any in situ or laboratory test results
  • any instrumentation and monitoring results
  • site plans, including locations of any exploratory holes
  • the provision of data in various formats
